Centroid — Polygon to Point

Convert polygons to their center points while preserving all attributes
How to use this tool?
  • Upload a Shapefile (ZIP or individual files), GeoJSON, or KML with polygons.
  • Choose whether you want the geometric centroid or the point inside the polygon (more stable).
  • Download the result as a point layer with all the original attributes.
The centroid may fall outside the polygon for concave shapes. Use "representative point" for greater robustness.
Select Geographic File
Supported formats: Shapefile (.shp + .shx + .dbf), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GeoPackage (.gpkg), GML, GPX, GeoParquet (.parquet), FlatGeobuf (.fgb), TopoJSON, ZIP with Shapefiles
For shapefile: hold down Ctrl and select ALL the files with the same name.
By default the input file's CRS is kept.
This format always exports in WGS84 (EPSG:4326) per the format specification.

What is the Centroid?

The centroid is the point representing a polygon's geometric "center of mass". Useful for cartographic labeling, proximity analysis, and geocoding of administrative units.

  • Thematic map labeling
  • Proximity analysis between areas
  • Distance calculation between polygons

Visual Example

Polygon centroid() Centroids X: 58.3 Y: 65.1 Layer with N polygons → N centroids as points = centroid = polygon Centroid: geometric center point of each polygon

Extracts the geometric center point of each polygon or multipolygon.

Frequently Asked Questions

The geometric centroid is the polygon's mathematical center of mass, but it can fall outside it for concave shapes (like a horseshoe). The representative point is always inside the polygon, making it more suitable for map labeling.

Yes. All attribute fields from the original polygon are transferred to the resulting centroid point. The output layer has the same fields as the input layer.

Shapefile (ZIP or individual files: .shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj, .cpg), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, GML, GeoPackage (.gpkg), GeoParquet (.parquet), FlatGeobuf (.fgb), and TopoJSON.
