Simplify Geometry — Reduce Vertices

Professional engine: coverage_simplify (Visvalingam-Whyatt) + adaptive Douglas-Peucker
How does it work?
  • Upload a Shapefile (ZIP or individual files), GeoJSON, or KML.
  • Choose the maximum number of vertices you want in the result.
  • The system automatically selects the best algorithm and iteratively adjusts the tolerance.
For adjacent polygons, Visvalingam-Whyatt is used (preserves shared edges, no gaps). For mixed geometries, Douglas-Peucker is used.
Select Geographic File
Supported formats: Shapefile (.shp + .shx + .dbf), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GeoPackage (.gpkg), GML, GPX, GeoParquet (.parquet), FlatGeobuf (.fgb), TopoJSON, ZIP with Shapefiles
For shapefile: hold down Ctrl and select ALL the files with the same name.
The system automatically adjusts the simplification to reach this target.
Quick selection:
A multi-layer file (KMZ/KML/GML) is delivered in a ZIP if the chosen format is not Shapefile.
By default the input file's CRS is kept.
This format always exports in WGS84 (EPSG:4326) per the format specification.

When to simplify?

Simplification reduces the number of vertices in complex geometries, decreasing file size without losing the overall shape. It's ideal for web visualization where sub-meter precision is not needed.

  • Web maps and mobile applications
  • Layers for fast visualization
  • Size reduction before uploading to a CDN

Frequently Asked Questions

Douglas-Peucker is the standard line-simplification algorithm in GIS. It removes vertices that fall within a tolerance distance of the line formed by the adjacent vertices, preserving the overall shape of the geometry.

It depends on the complexity of the geometries and the tolerance. With a 10 m tolerance, reductions of 50-80% are common in detailed administrative layers. With 100 m, it can reach 90-95% in very dense layers.

No. Only the number of vertices in the geometries is reduced. All attribute fields are preserved intact in the resulting layer.
