What is DMS?

DMS (Degrees, Minutes, Seconds) is the traditional format for geographic coordinates, used in classic cartography, GPS, and navigation systems.

Formats:

  • DD: Decimal Degrees — -12.0464°
  • DMS: 12° 2' 47.04" S
  • Hemisphere: N/S (lat), E/W (lon)

Formula:

DD = D + M/60 + S/3600
D = int(DD), M = int((DD-D)×60)
