Intersect — GIS Layer Intersection

Calculates the geometries that overlap between two layers
How to use this tool?
  • Upload Layer 1 (base layer): Shapefile ZIP, GeoJSON, or KML.
  • Upload Layer 2 (intersection layer): same format.
  • The result contains only the areas where both layers overlap, with the attributes of both.
Both layers must have the same CRS (coordinate system). The tool tries to automatically reproject them if they differ.
Shapefile (ZIP or individual files), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ
Shapefile (ZIP or individual files), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ
By default, Layer 1's CRS is kept.
This format always exports in WGS84 (EPSG:4326) per the format specification.

What is Intersection?

Intersection (Intersect) is a spatial analysis operation that returns only the areas where two layers geographically overlap, combining the attributes of both in the result.

  • Clip zones by administrative boundary
  • Service coverage analysis
  • Overlaying thematic layers

Visual Example

INPUT LAYERS Layer A Layer B intersect RESULT A ∩ B Attrs A + Attrs B preserved Result = area where A and B overlap gpd.overlay(A, B, how='intersection') Intersect: extracts matching geometries between two layers

Intersect extracts the geometry where two layers overlap, combining attributes from both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clip trims layer 1 using layer 2's shape as a "cookie cutter", keeping only layer 1's attributes. Intersect also clips, but the result includes the attributes of BOTH layers, making it more complete for analysis.

Ideally yes. The tool tries to automatically reproject if it detects different CRS, but it's recommended to make sure beforehand. Use the Reproject tool if necessary.

Shapefile (ZIP or individual files: .shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj, .cpg), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, GML, GeoPackage (.gpkg), GeoParquet (.parquet), FlatGeobuf (.fgb), and TopoJSON for both input layers.
