Validate and Repair Geometry

Detects and fixes invalid geometries: self-intersections, open rings, and topological errors
How to use this tool?
  • Upload a Shapefile (ZIP or individual files), GeoJSON, or KML.
  • Choose whether you only want to validate (report) or also repair the errors.
  • You will receive a detailed report and, if you chose to repair, a corrected file.
The repair uses the make_valid algorithm from GEOS/Shapely 2.0, the same one used by QGIS and PostGIS.
Select Geographic File
Supported formats: Shapefile (.shp + .shx + .dbf), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GeoPackage (.gpkg), GML, GPX, GeoParquet (.parquet), FlatGeobuf (.fgb), TopoJSON, ZIP with Shapefiles
For shapefile: hold down Ctrl and select ALL the files with the same name.

Options

The detailed diagnostic report (JSON) is only included with Shapefile.
By default the input file's CRS is kept.
This format always exports in WGS84 (EPSG:4326) per the format specification.

Common errors

  • Self-intersection: the polygon crosses itself
  • Open ring: the polygon does not close correctly
  • Null geometry: feature with no geometry assigned
  • Wrong orientation: rings in the wrong direction

These errors cause failures in spatial analysis, PostGIS, and ArcGIS.

Visual Example

WITH ERRORS ! Self-intersection Open ring make_valid (GEOS/Shapely) REPAIRED Valid geometry Closed ring Validation report 3 self-intersections 1 open ring 0 null 4 errors automatically repaired Validate & Repair: make_valid (GEOS) - compatible with QGIS/PostGIS

make_valid automatically repairs self-intersections, open rings, and null geometries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Invalid geometries usually originate from format conversions, incorrect manual digitizing, or imports from GPS/CAD. They are common in very old Shapefiles or ones exported from non-standard tools.

make_valid is the standard GEOS function (a geospatial library used by QGIS, PostGIS, Shapely) for repairing geometries. It converts any invalid geometry into an equivalent valid geometry, preserving as much of the original geometry as possible.

Shapefile (ZIP or individual files: .shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj, .cpg), GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, GML, GeoPackage (.gpkg), GeoParquet (.parquet), FlatGeobuf (.fgb), and TopoJSON. The output can be Shapefile ZIP or GeoJSON.
